Ration card eKYC is a one-time identity check. It confirms that each person whose name is on a ration card is a real, living individual and matches their own Aadhaar record. The Department of Food and Public Distribution runs it for cards under the National Food Security Act (NFSA), the law under which about 80 crore people get free foodgrains through ration shops.

The government says eKYC helps remove duplicate and ineligible names so that grain reaches the right families. For households, the practical point is simple: the drive is meant to weed out names that cannot be verified, so completing eKYC for every genuine member protects your family's entitlement. This guide explains the two ways to finish it and what to do when it does not work.

Who needs to complete eKYC

  • Every member listed on the ration card, not only the head of the family. Each person is verified against their own Aadhaar.
  • Cards under NFSA (Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Household cards). If you hold a state-scheme card, ask your fair price shop dealer whether it applies to you.
  • Members whose Aadhaar is already linked to the card still need eKYC if the shop or state portal shows it as pending. Linking (seeding) Aadhaar and completing eKYC are two different steps.

According to the Department of Food and Public Distribution, 64% of all PDS beneficiaries had completed eKYC by November 2024, and the drive has continued since. Deadlines are set by each state, which is why you see different last dates in different places. See our state-wise ration card eKYC last dates.

Method 1: at any ration shop (fingerprint)

This is the most common way and works for every state.

  1. Go to a fair price shop (ration shop) with your ration card and the Aadhaar number of each member who needs eKYC.
  2. Each member must be present in person, because the check uses their own fingerprint or iris.
  3. The dealer selects the member on the e-PoS machine and asks them to place a finger on the scanner.
  4. If the fingerprint matches Aadhaar, the machine shows success and the eKYC is recorded against that member.

The department has made eKYC possible at any fair price shop across the country, not only the shop that issued your card. This helps migrant workers who live away from home.

Tips for the shop visit:

  • Go on a weekday outside distribution days, when queues are shorter.
  • Wash and dry your hands; worn or dry fingertips are the most common reason a match fails.
  • Ask for a printed slip or check on the machine screen that the status changed to completed.

Method 2: on your phone with the Mera eKYC app (face)

The Mera eKYC app, published by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), lets ration card holders do Aadhaar-based face authentication from a phone. According to its official listing, the user enters their Aadhaar number for OTP authentication and then completes face authentication.

The usual steps are:

  1. Install Mera eKYC from the Google Play Store. Check that the publisher is NIC before installing.
  2. Install the Aadhaar FaceRD app when asked; the face check runs through it.
  3. Open Mera eKYC, allow camera and location access, and select your state. The app works only in the states and union territories that have enabled it; if yours is not listed, use Method 1.
  4. Enter the member's Aadhaar number and the OTP sent to the mobile number linked to that Aadhaar.
  5. Choose face eKYC, hold the phone at eye level in good light, and follow the prompts to capture a live face scan.
  6. Wait for the confirmation message, and repeat for each member.

The app needs the mobile number that is linked to Aadhaar for the OTP. If that number is no longer in use, update it at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra first. Many users report that the final step fails even after the face scan succeeds, usually because of server load. If that happens, try again at a quieter time, such as early morning, or go to the ration shop instead.

How to check whether eKYC is done

  • At the ration shop: the dealer can see each member's eKYC status on the e-PoS machine.
  • On your state portal: most state food and civil supplies websites have a ration card details or eKYC status page. The NFSA portal links to every state's PDS website.
  • In the Mera eKYC app: the confirmation message after a successful attempt is your proof; take a screenshot.

If eKYC keeps failing

ProblemWhat to do
Fingerprint does not matchTry the face app, or update biometrics at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra and retry
OTP not receivedThe Aadhaar-linked mobile number may be old; update it at an Aadhaar centre
Name spelling or date of birth differsCorrect the ration card details at the state food office, or correct Aadhaar, so both match
Member's name missing from the cardApply to the state food department to add the member before eKYC
Someone asks for moneyeKYC is a government service at the ration shop; report demands to your state's PDS helpline

Why this matters

Ration cards carry a household's entitlement to free or subsidised grain. The government says digitisation, Aadhaar seeding and de-duplication have already removed about 5.8 crore ration cards from the system. Completing eKYC for every genuine member keeps your family's names safely on the card, and it lets you use One Nation One Ration Card to collect grain anywhere in India.

Frequently asked questions

Is ration card eKYC needed for every family member?

Yes. eKYC checks each beneficiary listed on the ration card against their own Aadhaar details, so every member whose name is on the card has to complete it, including children who have an Aadhaar number.

Can I do eKYC at a ration shop outside my home state?

The Department of Food and Public Distribution says eKYC can be done at any fair price shop across the country, so migrant workers do not have to travel back to the shop where the card was issued.

What is the last date for ration card eKYC?

There is no single national date. Each state and union territory sets and extends its own deadline, so check your state's food and civil supplies department or the fair price shop.

What if my fingerprint does not match at the ration shop?

Try the face authentication app, or update your biometrics at an Aadhaar Seva Kendra and then repeat the eKYC. Fingerprints often fail for elderly people and manual workers.
