The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) launched five new initiatives on September 29, 2026, at a stakeholders' conference called Aadhaar Samvaad in Kolkata. The most useful one for ordinary families is face authentication at ration shops, which gives beneficiaries another way to prove their identity when fingerprints do not work.
The conference was held on the 17th Aadhaar Day. Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada was the chief guest, and UIDAI said more than 600 policy makers, industry representatives and technology professionals attended.
The five launches at a glance
| Initiative | Who it is for | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Face Authentication for ePDS | Ration card holders | Contactless, consent-based identity check at ration shops |
| Revamped UIDAI website | All residents | Clearer layout, accessibility features, 13 languages |
| Token Management System | People visiting UIDAI offices | Easier visits to UIDAI state and regional offices |
| SWIK Portal 2.0 | Non-government entities | Online route to seek approval for Aadhaar authentication |
| Sub-AUA/Sub-KUA (LITE) Framework | Low-volume users of Aadhaar authentication | Use an existing agency's setup instead of building one |
Face authentication at ration shops
Under the Electronic Public Distribution System (ePDS), ration is usually released after the beneficiary's fingerprint is matched with Aadhaar. Elderly people, manual workers and others whose fingerprints have worn out often face repeated failures at the shop.
The new option, built jointly by UIDAI, the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the National Informatics Centre, lets the beneficiary be verified by face instead. UIDAI describes it as consent-based and contactless, and as an additional mode, not a replacement for fingerprints.
States and Union Territories have to integrate face authentication into their own ePDS systems. So when it reaches your local ration shop depends on your state's food department. The release did not give a timeline for states.
If you still need to complete your ration card eKYC, our state-wise list of ration card eKYC last dates explains where things stand.
A new UIDAI website
UIDAI also unveiled a redesigned website. It is organised around the four main reasons people visit: to understand Aadhaar, use a service, find a document or get help. Key features:
- 13 languages, including English and Hindi, through the BHASHINI language platform. UIDAI said it plans to take this to 23 languages.
- Accessibility tools such as screen-reader support, adjustable font sizes, better colour contrast and keyboard navigation.
- A common look with the myAadhaar portal and the Aadhaar App.
- A Career Portal for online applications for deputation posts at UIDAI.
Token system for UIDAI offices
A new Token Management System is meant to make it easier to visit UIDAI's state and regional offices for services, where such services are offered. The release did not explain how tokens will be booked.
Two changes for businesses and departments
SWIK Portal 2.0 (swik.meity.gov.in) lets eligible non-government entities submit proposals for Aadhaar authentication use cases directly to the ministry or department concerned, under the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance framework.
The Sub-AUA/Sub-KUA (LITE) Framework is for government bodies and eligible entities that need only a small number of authentications. They can use the infrastructure of an existing authentication agency (AUA/KUA) instead of building their own, while following UIDAI's security and privacy rules.
What officials said
"Aadhaar is a great success story," Prasada said at the event, according to the PIB release. UIDAI Chief Executive Officer Saurabh Vijay said the launches were in line with the authority's focus on keeping residents at the centre of its work.
What it means for you
- If fingerprint checks fail at your ration shop, face authentication may become an option once your state adds it. Ask your ration dealer or state food department.
- The new UIDAI website should be easier to use in your own language and with a screen reader.
- For enrolment and updates, the usual Aadhaar centres and the myAadhaar portal continue as before.
