Union Home Minister Amit Shah opened the Barapullah Elevated Road Phase 3 in Delhi on September 29, 2026. The stretch was built at a cost of Rs 1,635 crore and gives commuters a signal-free route between East Delhi and South Delhi.

At the same event, Shah laid the foundation stones for the Modi Mill-Savitri Cinema flyover and the Loni underpass. The Home Ministry said the projects inaugurated and started on the day are together worth more than Rs 1,941 crore.

Key points

  • What opened: Barapullah Elevated Road Phase 3.
  • Cost: Rs 1,635 crore.
  • Route: from Mayur Vihar Phase I in East Delhi to the existing Barapullah elevated road at Sarai Kale Khan, with onward connection towards South Delhi.
  • Length: together with the older Barapullah stretches, it forms a continuous elevated route of about 9 km, as reported by The Hans India.
  • New projects started: Modi Mill-Savitri Cinema flyover and Loni underpass.

How it helps commuters

Until now, drivers coming from Mayur Vihar and the Noida side towards AIIMS, Lodhi Road or South Delhi had to pass through busy junctions near the Yamuna and Sarai Kale Khan. The new elevated stretch lets them skip those signals.

In a post on X quoted in the PIB release, Shah said the road "will provide signal-free connectivity between East and South Delhi", reduce traffic jams and save travel time.

Local reports quoted authorities as saying the drive from East Delhi towards AIIMS could come down from about 35-40 minutes to nearly 15 minutes, depending on traffic. Actual savings will vary with the time of day.

Who was present

According to The Hans India, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh and minister Kapil Mishra attended the event.

Background

Barapullah is a network of elevated roads built along the Barapullah drain to create an east-west corridor across Delhi. The earlier stretches run west from Sarai Kale Khan towards South and Central Delhi. Phase 3 extends the corridor east across the Yamuna to Mayur Vihar.

What happens next

The Modi Mill-Savitri Cinema flyover and the Loni underpass are at the foundation-stone stage. The release did not give their costs or completion dates.

The opening comes as Delhi prepares for the winter pollution season. The Commission for Air Quality Management has already approved a revised GRAP schedule with stricter rules for vehicles in Delhi-NCR.
