The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) launched a Livestock Insurance Portal in New Delhi on September 28, 2026, to bring the insurance of farm animals onto one online platform. The portal, at rashtriyapashubima.dahd.gov.in, serves the livestock insurance activity of the National Livestock Mission (NLM).

Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh) launched the portal in the presence of Minister of State S.P. Singh Baghel and Animal Husbandry Secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar. Representatives of state governments and insurance companies attended, and the ministry said more than 4,000 people joined the event online.

What the portal does

The ministry described the portal as an end-to-end system covering the full life of a livestock insurance policy:

  • Policy issue - enrolment of animals and issue of insurance policies
  • Premium management - handling of premium payments
  • Claims - processing and settlement of claims
  • Beneficiary verification - checking that the farmer and animal are genuine
  • Real-time monitoring - live tracking of policies for officials

It links farmers, state governments, insurance companies and implementing agencies on a single platform, in place of separate channels.

Why it matters for farmers

According to the ministry, the portal is meant to make enrolment simpler and quicker, make claim settlement more transparent and accountable, and let policies be tracked in real time. For a farmer, the practical hope is fewer paper forms and a clearer record of the policy and any claim if an animal dies.

At the launch, the minister said livestock is a key source of income for millions of rural households, and that timely, affordable insurance protects farmers from losses due to death of animals, disease outbreaks, accidents and natural calamities. He asked insurance companies and state governments to publicise the scheme widely so that more farmers use it.

How many animals are covered

Secretary Naresh Pal Gangwar said that more than 30 lakh animals have already been insured during the current year. He also outlined the scheme's premium rates and the part of the premium paid by the farmer, though the ministry's release did not list those figures. Farmers can confirm the rates that apply to them with their local animal husbandry office.

Key points

  • Portal: rashtriyapashubima.dahd.gov.in
  • Scheme: livestock insurance under the National Livestock Mission
  • Launched: September 28, 2026, New Delhi
  • Animals insured this year so far: over 30 lakh
  • Covers: enrolment, premium, claims, verification and monitoring

Who uses the portal

The portal is a shared system for everyone involved in the scheme: farmers, state governments, insurance companies and implementing agencies. The release did not give a separate date for new features, so farmers who want to insure an animal can start by asking their local animal husbandry office or veterinary hospital how enrolment works in their area.

What happens next

The minister asked states and insurers to run awareness campaigns, including on social media, to spread the word about the scheme among livestock farmers.
